Stuff that matters
Time flies. I'm 31 years old, and a year of time seems to take more like a month. Also, society expects more each day, while it seems I've got time to do less on that same day. Recently I've been thinking about how to get more time.
Actually, the answer is easy. No matter what you do, You don't get more time. So the solution should not be about getting more time. It should be about how you spend your time. If you want to enjoy your time more, you need to determine what is important, focus on that, and cut the crap. Or in short: Minimize.
One concrete example, I've started thinking about why i work. There's a saying in dutch, of which the literal translation is, 'There are those who live to work, and then there are those that work for a living.'
I've decided I work for a living. But what's the living part then? I'm currently figuring that out actually, but one major aspect is the feeling of 'being free'.
Personally, I get the feeling of being free when I have time for doing things I decide I want to do.
So what's the solution? A combination of several things actually. This is a work in progress, and I hope it will always be so. A few examples from recent history come to mind:
- I've started working 4 days instead of 5. It's amazing how much extra time this gives you. Consequently, I enjoy my work now more as well!
- Cut senseless time spent on social media like Facebook and Twitter.
- Cut senseless time spent on reading RSS feeds.
- Minimized this site: it no longer runs on a CMS, there's little makeup, it's pure plain static html 5.
- Focus on inspiring and/or satisfying things.
- One of those inspiring things to me right now is photography. I hope to be able to create exposures good enough for me to show to you. I'm still very much a beginner though.
Enjoy your life. Do stuff that matters. Cut crap that doesn't.
